Like many London-based musicians I often find myself at Abbey Road, Air Lyndhurst and other studios recording film and television soundtracks; a great chance to work with some wonderfully talented composers and colleagues. The schedule is always tight and the pace of work often super-fast so everyone needs to be on the ball from the minute the red light goes on.
Most of the time you don’t know what you’re going to be playing until you open up the folder of music waiting on your stand in the studio – nothing like the element of surprise to keep you on your toes!
After several decades working in studios I’m still amazed by the depth of talent that’s on display; leaders and principal players from London’s world-class orchestras, soloists, and members of leading string quartets. The work is well paid which is nice and helps many of us to sustain our own projects for which the rewards are perhaps musical rather than financial. The bonus is that composers and producers know that they are going to get world-class recordings of their scores, something we all take a great deal of pride in delivering. DJ
